Increased Theft Of Copper, Aluminum And Air Conditioning Units In SW Florida
With the economy in a slump and the unemployment rate at all time highs, the increase in crime rate has risen – especially in the theft of copper, aluminum and air conditioning units. There is not a day that goes by you do not read something in our local paper or hear something on the news about these thefts. Above right is a picture from one of our customer’s air conditioning units. The coil, wiring and copper pipes were removed, leaving only the casing.

We receive phone calls, almost on a daily basis for replacement condensing units. We have talked with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s office; they tell us on average they are receiving 2 calls per day. In Gulf Cove alone, there has been 15 condensing unit thefts.
What can you do to protect yourself? Here are a few tips. Make sure your grass is cut and avoid putting up hurricane shutters. Make sure you have lights on timers if you are away at night or on vacation. If possible, have a neighbor check your home daily. These thefts have occurred not only to residents homes that leave for the summer, but full time residents too. You would be surprised at how “quick” these thefts occur while you simply ran up to the store for something. |
Most homeowner’s insurance policies have deductibles of at least $2000 or more. And remember if your system is 12 SEER or less, you would need to replace your whole system, not just the CU. On requests of our customers, 4-Seasons has come up with several solutions to this growing theft problem. The first is called the Condensing Unit Security Cage. This cage is custom built to your particular condensing unit. We are also installing alarms directly connected to your condensing unit that go off if wires are cut or the pressure starts to leak from the Freon lines. Questions? The Condensing Unit Security Cage system is cutom made to your specific condensing unit shape and size. They can be attached directly to the ouside wall of your home or garage, bolted down to the cement pad, or in some cases may have to be attached by footers. The cage is covered in a Marine Powder Coat ensuring long life and no rust for years to come. You may want to check with your insurance company, they may give you an additional discount on your homeowner's insurance.
